Privacy policy

Last updated: 6 October 2026.

This page explains what happens to your information when you use this website. It's written in plain language rather than dense legal text, in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

who runs this site

a home kind is run by an individual, not a registered company - there's no company name, registered address, or company number to list here because none exists. This site doesn't currently generate any income.

no mailing list

This site doesn't run a mailing list or newsletter, so it doesn't collect email addresses. Downloading anything from this site doesn't ask for, or record, anything about you.

other data collected by the site

This site uses PostHog (servers in the EU) for simple, anonymous usage counts, such as which pages are visited and how many products are scanned. It stores a random ID in your browser so a repeat visit isn't counted as a new person. It doesn't know your name or email address, and it isn't used for advertising. There are no advertising scripts on this site. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which may log a basic request (such as your IP address) as part of serving the font files - this is standard for any site using web fonts and is not used by this site to identify you.

The scanner only reads your camera while you're scanning, and the photo or video isn't uploaded or stored. If you link a barcode to a brand yourself, that link is saved on your own device only.

If you email hello@ahomekind.com directly, that email and your address are kept as part of normal correspondence, for as long as is reasonably needed to deal with your query.

barcodes and brands you send in

If you use the form to tell me about a product that the scanner didn't recognise, I record the barcode number, the brand or product name you typed, and the date and time, so I can check it and add it to the site. I don't ask for your name or email, and the form doesn't record who you are. To limit spam, your internet address is used briefly (for up to a couple of hours) to count how many submissions come from one place, and then it's discarded. Approved barcodes and brands become part of the public site. Anything I don't use is deleted: rejected submissions straight away, and ones I haven't got round to reviewing automatically after 30 days (90 days if I've marked one to research further). Please don't put personal information in the form.

your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to: know what data is held about you; ask for a copy of it; ask for it to be corrected or deleted; withdraw consent at any time (e.g. by unsubscribing); and complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk if you think your data hasn't been handled properly.

To exercise any of these rights, contact hello@ahomekind.com.

As this site isn't currently trading or earning income, it isn't required to register or pay a fee with the ICO at this time (per the ICO's own self-assessment). This will be reviewed if that changes.

keeping this up to date

If this site starts earning income, or adds advertising tools or changes how it collects data in future, this policy will be updated to reflect that - including re-checking whether ICO registration becomes required.
